Aamchur powder or raw mango
powder gets its name from the Hindi words ‘aam’ meaning mango, and ‘chur’
meaning to crush. As the name already suggest, aamchur or amchur, or aamchoor
is prepared by drying and crushing raw mangoes (kairi). Given the many health
benefits and little or no risk factors associated with aamchur use, this is a
spice that is definitely worth adding to your spice rack.
Making and Using Aamchur
Powder (Raw Mango Powder)
Aamchur powder is easily
available in any Indian grocery store or you can even make your own raw mango
powder.
When using
aamchur powder it does not need to be cooked much, so should be added to the
vegetable or curry only towards the end of the cooking process. It can be used
to make spice mixtures that are used in marination or stuffing. It can also be
added to fruit juice based mocktails. Aamchur powder is also used in the making
of chutneys to give the chutney or dip an lip-smacking kick. The tangy flavour
of aamchur powder is especially enjoyed in pregnancy as it helps combat morning
sickness and nausea. Health
Benefits of Aamchur powder (Raw Mango powder)
• High in Iron – Aamchur has high iron content so it is
especially beneficial for pregnant women and those suffering from anaemia. It
can easily be added to cooked vegetables and curries and become a part of the
daily diet for pregnant women.
• Reduces acidity, improves digestion
and enhances bowel movements – Mangoes
contain phenols. Phenolic compounds are powerful antioxidants and have
anti-cancer properties. Aamchur powder address the trifecta of maladies most
pregnant women suffer from – indigestion, acidity and constipation.
• Benefits cardiovascular health– Amchur has many benefits that help in
maintaining a healthy heart. In Ayurvedic medicine also amchur is used to keep
the heart in good functioning order. It has been found to act as a deterrent to
heart failures.
• Detoxification – Mangoes are a rich source of Vitamin A,
C, D, B6 and beta carotenes. Similar properties are found in amchoor and help
in ridding the body of toxins, in detoxifying the body and in treating anaemia.
Amchur is also used in Ayurveda to treat urinary tract infections which is a
common occurrence in pregnancy.
• Controls blood pressure and
diabetes – Mangoes help to keep a low glycemic index and keep
the fat levels controlled. Potassium present in aamchur ensures that blood
levels are regulated. Since gestational diabetes is a very real threat for
women, consumption of amchur powder as part of the regular diet can help dodge
this.
• Improves vision – Regular consumption of amchur also
helps in improving eyesight and delaying the onset of age related problems with
vision like cataract.
• Anti-aging effect – While
pregnancy hormones and the high levels of estrogen will ensure that your skin
glows, aamchur is similarly beneficial for the skin and hair. It has anti-aging
properties that keep your skin baby soft.
• Boosts metabolism – The
antioxidant properties in aamchur powder help to lose weight by increasing
metabolism and making one feel more active. For women feeling exceptionally
tired during their pregnancy, consumption of aamchur powder during the midday
meal can give that little energy boost so required in the afternoons.
Note: An afternoon nap is highly
recommended for the health of the mother and the fetus.
• Scurvy – Aamchur is an active agent in the prevention and
treatment of scurvy – a medical condition caused due to deficiency of Vitamin
C. When aamchur is used together with jaggery it has been found especially
effective in combating scurvy.
Aamchur powder has been found to have
several health benefits and is generally used freely in Indian cooking.
