Peruvian Cherries have the favor of pineapple, mango,with a mild refreshing fruity acidity, similar to strawberries. tart and sweet all in one ..species of the genus Physalis, is originally from Peru. Short-lived perennial-- and is frost tender--a cultivated crop since Incan times. The fruit is a smooth berry, resembling a miniature, spherical, yellow tomato., it is about the size of a marble, about 2 in.- diameter. It is bright yellow to orange in color, and it is sweet when ripe, with a characteristic, mildly tart flavor, making it ideal for snacks, cakes, or made into pies and preserves.Fruit is loaded with vitamin A, C and B. It is relished in salads and fruit salads, sometimes combined with avocado. Also, because of the fruit's decorative appearance, it is popular in restaurants as an exotic garnish for desserts. They go nicely with meats and other savory foods and can be dried and eaten much like figs, apricots or grapes. As a special treat try dipping the fruit in melted chocolate! Fantastic, fragrant and exotic, they also make a lovely still life in a glass bowl for the middle of any table. The fruit can be stored for 3 months or more. Eat only ripe fruits The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees, wind. zone -7 if on a sunny south wall. a useful small crop for the home garden. Propagation Seed - sow March/April only just covering the seed. Germination usually takes place quickly and freely. Prick out the seedlings into individual pots of fairly rich soil when they are large enough to handle and plant them out after the last expected frosts,plants can be pruned or let grow big to 3-5 ft. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. Easy to grow as a perennial or annual , also can be container grown. Remember the vegetation is poisonous.
