Originally from Mexico, this beautiful terrestrial Bromeliad offers vases of soft, spineless (except at the very base of the plant), grass-like foliage and tall, conspicuous spikes of intense orange-red flowers in spring or summer. Naturally growing in warmer conditions in moderately shady areas, it will accept cooler conditions, even down to the upper 30s with protection. Though it prefers some warmth, it does not like to go above 90, and it never wants to dry out. The nectar-laden flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies, and on well-grown plants, can attain heights of 3'. May be grown indoors or outside in temperate climates, in moist, humus-rich soils. When grown outdoors, the plants will form large clumps; making a dramatic statement in the landscape.
