Item description

This is a lot of ephemera from the union of Sophia Frances Haring (1850-1914) to John Ryley (1852-1892). They were married on August 4th in Pearl River, New York, and their marriage certificate was signed by F.S. Schenck, the pastor of the Reformed Church of Clarkstown, New York, both in Rockland County. The certificate forms part of a book of advice for newlyweds on how to have a successful Christian marriage. The book measures 3.25" x .25" x 4.75" and has 96 pages. Also included is an invitation to the wedding reception at the home of the newleyweds with their calling cards and original envelope. The invitations were printed by B.C. Ridley, 87 Fulton St., New York. John Ryley was the son of Sarah Ryder and William Ryley, according to notes found with the estate. He became the Justice of the Peace in Clarkstown. Sophia Haring was the daughter of Jacob Cornelius Haring (1826-1899) and Elizabeth Priscella Ackerman Haring (1790-1861). They originally lived in Pearl River, and later built a home in Nanuet. After their marriage, John and Sophia settled in Clarkstown, then later Valley Cottage, NY. They had four children together: Mabel Ryley Polhemus (1877-1935), Edna Ryley (1878-1957), Carrie Ryley (1879-1942), and William Haring "Willie" Ryley (1884-1888).
