The painting is a figurative landscape portrait painting in Gouache done on paper. The painting is framed in a simple painted wood picture frame under glass. The painting depicts many soldiers in uniforms in an encampment. The painting is the work of a very talented artist (see photos). The painting is signed in the lower right hand corner by the artist: C. Fahringer (Carl Fahringer, 1874-1952). There is other writing along the bottom edge of this painting written by the artist (likely identifying the location and date ? see photos). There is also a good deal of information written on the back side by the former owner (I have included a google translation of that information in a photo posted into the listing). The painting framed measures in total about 11.25 inches high, and it measures about 14.25 inches wide. The painting is sold in as is as found estate condition. The glass panel is loose in the picture frame. The picture frame has some scuffs, some scratches, some paint finish losses, and some other signs of visible wear. The painting has stains, discoloration, fading and other obvious signs of visible wear (see photos and / or written description for the condition of this item). A nice old antique gouache painting for your collection. Here is some information about this artist: Carl Fahringer was born in 1874 and died in 1952. Carl was a war painter who volunteered for the First World War. He created fleeting naturalistic paintings to capture the crushing scenes of the war in a skillful manner to immortalize them for posterity. An inscription on the back of one of Fahringer's paintings confirms its authenticity and that he was the grandfather of Sigmund Fahringer. ________ Carl Fahringer was born in 1874 in Wiener Neustadt. From 1892 to 1898 the painter studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Among others, his teacher was Sigmund L'Allemand. From 1898 to 1902 Carl Fahringer was a pupil of C. v. Marr at the Academy of Arts in Munich. He was a member of the Hagenbund (1903-1905) and joined the Künstlerhaus in 1907. He worked in Russia as a war painter as well as in Italy between 1914 and 1918. From 1929 to 1945 he taught at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts where he also led a painting master class. Carl Fahringer went on several study trips to Africa, Java, Bali and Sumatra to name a few. He was fascinated by the the foreign fauna and the different landscapes. At first an animal painter and book illustrator, he moved towards a personally characterised impressionism. Common motives are flower and animal markets and the artist's most important achievements are his animal paintings. In these works, he focused on the depiction of exotic predators. In addition his work also features ßnumerous oriental watercolours as well as portraits. Today Fahringer, together with Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel, is ranked among the most important and original Austrian animal painters of the 20th century. Carl Fahringer died in 1952 in Vienna.
