Item description

An original Duke Ellington record album cover/poster for the "Black and Beige" concert performed at Carnegie Hall. This artwork cover was displayed in a New York City record shop to promote the RCA Victor album when it was first released in 1943. Suitable for framing, this rare cover measures 12" by 12" and opens to folio size of four panels with extensive liner notes (see photos). Although a record is not included, the music is still readily available on CD. Black, Brown and Beige is an extended jazz work written by Duke Ellington and Orchestra for his first concert at Carnegie Hall on January 23, 1943. The concert was a tremendous success. It tells the history of African Americans and was the composer's attempt to transform attitudes about race, elevate American music, specifically jazz, to be seen as on par with classical European music, and challenge America to live up to its founding principles of freedom and equality for all.
