Item description

Madonna of the Lilies ? Alfons Mucha ? Catholic Art Print ? Catholic Gift Painted at the height of Art Nouveau by its greatest painter, Alfons Mucha, this is probably the most famous piece of Catholic art in that style. Since we love Art Nouveau, we've been meaning to list this beauty for some time. It has the dreaminess, the languid swirls, the femininity of that style, all used to display the Mother of God. According to the Mucha Foundation, Mucha conceived of the subject as 'Virgo puissima," and the mass of lilies represent purity. The little girl with the Slavic folk costume holds a wreath of ivy leaves which is a symbol of remembrance. She looks out at us to bring us into the painting, and, as is often the case with little avatar figures in paintings, her serious look questions us along the lines of, Do you not wish to have more faith? She has a strong physical presence in contrast with the ethereal figure of Mary. (source: muchafoundation.org)Alfons Mucha (1860-1939) was himself Slavic, an enormously successful painter of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. He lived in Paris for along time, doing a lot of posters and other commercial work. Later in his life, a few years after this picture, he returned home to Prague and did a series of huge, epic Slavic history pictures. Tempera on canvas. 247 x 182 cm. 1905.** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a blank border all around the image of about .5" for 5x7, 1.3" for 8.5x11, 1.6" for 11x14, and 1.75" for 13x17" and 16x20". For the two poster sizes, 18x24 and 24x36, we use only 0.5" margins. The ratio of the rectangle of the painting does not match the rectangles of the paper, so these figures are all approximate! The white space gives the framed picture a finished look without using a matt. - Acid-free paper- Archival pigments, rated to last for generations.- Cardboard backer- Above story of the art- Enclosed in a tight-fitting, crystal clear bag. Thanks for your interest! Thanks!Sue John"In order to communicate the message entrusted to her by Christ, the Church needs art." ~ St. Pope John Paul IIOriginal image is out-of-copyright.
