Item description

This is a rare, very old vial or medicine bottle dug from the ruins of a Virginia plantation more than 40 years ago by my father, an avid bottle hunter. This type of bottle could date as old as the Civil War Era but could also be as "recent" as the early 1900s. The ruins that it was found in date to at least to the late 1700s. Its an interesting bottle. Its lopsided and misshapen along the lip and throughout the bottle itself. The glass is unevenly poured, all indicators of old handmade bottles. However, there is a seam going all the way to the lip. I think this means it is poured from an early hinge mold, but not machine made. If it was from a mold, it was obviously a poor quality one. It is very typical of Civil War era aqua vials. (See the grouping of bottles under the Civil War section of the website referenced below.) Vials were often used in that era for medicines, such as laudanum. The bottom is unmarked. The bottle is in amazing shape for such an old, dug bottle, free from breaks or cracks. There is some mild sediment deposit around the neck and some age bubbles. The vial is a beautiful aqua color. It measures about 4" tall and .75" wide. https://sha.org/bottle/medicinal.htm#Homeopathic%20Vials/Bottles https://sha.org/bottle/pontil_scars.htm
