COVER: Can South Africa save itself? Black Rage: and signs of White Reforms.
TOP OF THE WEEK:
MARCOS'S BIG GAMBLE: In threatening to call early elections, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos may be aiming to upstage an impeachment motion that will charge his wife and aides with shady U.S. investments. But a snap ballot may also be his best hope for appeasing Washington and salvaging his regime.
BLACK RAGE, WHITE REFORM: More than 50 people died last week as South Africa endured its worst spate of bloodshed since the current round of violence began. Behind the scenes, however, President Pieter W. Botha was considering a reform package that would grant South Africa's black majority a share of political power. The plan was politically risky; it may not be implemented at all. But if Botha musters the courage, South Africa may yet take a step away from the racism and profound economic injustice of apartheid.
HA-HA-A-GO-GO: Why are these people laughing? In clubs like the Comix Annex and the Punch Line, stand-up comedy is once again a healthy business. The ranks of professional comics have grown in the last few years, and there is a new kind of vaudeville circuit winding its way across America.
BORN IN THE US.S.R. They are some of the stranger ingredients the American melting pot has assimilated: 120,000 Soviets who emigrated during the detente of the 1970s. Most of them have flourished, and once-dying neighborhoods (New York, left) are now sprouting Russian delis, discos and supper clubs.
UEBERROTH SCORES: To most fans the baseball strike was a matter of money. But for the new commissioner it was something more: a test of his persuasive power and a challenge to his growing celebrity. Peter Ueberroth walked the line that divided players and owners--and emerged the only clear winner.
