Item description
Vintage original 14 x 22 in. US window card from the 1930's WWI-themed war comedy, PRIVATE JONES, released in 1933 by Universal Pictures and directed by Russell Mack and an uncredited William Wyler. Mr. Jones (Lee Tracy) is drafted to fight in World War I, after America declares war on Germany in 1917. He is, however, wholly unwilling and attempts to evade the draft by arguing to be the sole provider for his family, but to no avail. He snarls at patriotism and does not think there is any reason for him to fight the Germans. After actively fighting for his country, his opinions may have changed. The cast includes Gloria Stuart, Donald Cook, Emma Dunn, Shirley Grey, Frank McHugh, Russell Gleason, Walter Catlett, and Berton Churchill.
The design features a large portrait of Pvt. William "Bill" Jones (Lee Tracy) with co-stars Donald Cook and Gloria Stuart on either side of him as explosions occur all around. It is unrestored in fine condition with several creases of varying sizes on the bottom left corner; two 3 in. long horizontal creases on the left border above the center that enter the background area; several small creases on each top corner; an scattered pinpoint speckling across most of the image area. The color tints are fresh and vibrant without any signs of fading.
The film's cutting continuity contained two endings. In the first ending, Bill dies on the battlefield after saving Gregg's life. According to the New York Times, the "happy" ending, in which Bil" survives and receives a medal, was used in at least some of the release prints. According to Variety, outtakes from All Quiet on the Western Front, a 1930 Universal film, were used in this picture.
