Product description: This LP contains the complete original album Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown (EmArcy MG36004). It was originally issued only under the singer s name. However, the trumpeter's tragic death in 1956, and the fact that this was his only recorded collaboration with Vaughan, led to both of their names being featured on the covers of later re-editions. Clifford Brown died in a car accident on June 26, 1956, at the tender age of 25, bringing one of the most exciting careers in jazz to a tragic close. Oddly enough, he had endured a previous car crash nearly five years before, which temporarily prevented him from playing trumpet. He returned to his instrument after receiving encouragement from fellow musicians like Dizzy Gillespie. His recording career would last for only four years, beginning in March 21, 1952 with three tracks by Chris Powell and the Blue Flames (two studio sides and an aircheck). The only other dates featuring Clifford backing vocals consist of three wonderful albums made in 1954 with Dinah Washington, Helen Merrill, and Sarah Vaughan. Considered the best of them all, the latter LP is reissued here in its entirety. Sarah s first recordings took place in 1944 with the Billy Eckstine orchestra, and she was an active participant in concerts and recording sessions with such legendary bebop stars as Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. Even though she would enjoy a long and prolific career, this early album is still regarded as one of her very best. Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown was overwhelmingly a critical success. In Bebop: The Best Musicians and Recordings, jazz commentator Scott Yanow wrote that everything works on the album, making it an essential acquisition. Ink Blot Magazine, characterizing this as one of Vaughan s jazziest albums, also described it as one of her greatest
