VINTAGE QUACK CHILDRENS MEDICINE Bottle The bottle stands 4-1/2 inches tall by 1-1/4 inches diameter and had a small cork stopper. The bottle is boldly embossed: "SIROP DES ENFANTS DU DR. CODERRE" . Referred to as baby killer patent medicine. It actually contained alcohol, opiates, and chloroform. It was advertised to "sooth both child and mother". In all actuality, it was directly responsible for the untimely death of many of them! Most quack medicines from the no science/no regulation era hid the fact that they were really just an opiate martini. They of course wanted you to think that the euphoric state was caused by the efficacy of the preparation, and wasn't just a standard drugging. This bottle is circa 1885, antique aqua in color with a smooth base and nicely tooled ring lip. Advertisements from the 1890s advertised 50 years of use of this remedy, which was created in the 1840s. It seems that Dr. J. Emery-Coderre was the originator of its invention, and the other companies presumably took over from the original company. Corporate listings for this product attribute it to at least three different owners: J. Emery-Coderre, B.E. McGale and Wingate Chemical Co.
