Item description
War of the Worlds Collection
Orson Welles caused a nationwide panic with his broadcast of ?War of
the Worlds??a realistic radio dramatization of a Martian invasion of
Earth.
Orson Welles was only 23 years old when his Mercury Theater company
decided to update H.G. Wells? 19th-century science fiction novel War of the Worlds
for national radio. Despite his age, Welles had been in radio for
several years, most notably as the voice of ?The Shadow? in the hit
mystery program of the same name. ?War of the Worlds? was not planned as
a radio hoax, and Welles had little idea of the havoc it would cause.
The show began on Sunday, October 30, at 8 p.m. A voice announced:
?The Columbia Broadcasting System and its affiliated stations present
Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater on the air in ?War of the Worlds?
by H.G. Wells.
This collection includes the original radio broadcast and several TV shows and movies inspired by the
War of the Worlds broadcast, some adapted from the same basic script.
TITLES:
The Night America Trembled - starring Ed Asner and James Coburn. Hosted by Edward R. Murrow, this was a television dramatization of 1938 radio broadcast of "The War of the Worlds" that aired September 9, 1957, as an episode of the CBS series Studio One. DVD-R.
The Night That Panicked America - starring Paul Shenar, Vic Morrow, John Ritter and Tom Bosley. The
1975 made-for-television movie, which originally aired on ABC, is a
faithful reproduction of Orson Welles' famous 1938 CBS Radio broadcast
of The Mercury Theater On The Air production of H.G. Wells' "The War Of
The Worlds." The movie also documents the hours leading up to the
historic broadcast, the nationwide panic during the broadcast, as many
listeners believed the Martian invasion was real, and its aftermath.
DVD-R.
The Original War of the Worlds Radio Broadcast on CD.
The Day the Sky Exploded - starring Paul Hubschmid
and Madeline Fisher. Scientists discover that a group of meteors are
hurtling on a collison course with Earth, and if they hit, the planet
will be destroyed. Science fiction - 82 Minutes. DVD-R.
Menace From Outer Space - When an alien rocket
descends to Earth, an expedition into space to find the origins of the
strange device results in a clash between two worlds in this science
fiction film that was compiled from three episodes of the Rocky Jones,
Space Ranger television series. Upon studying the alien rocket and
determining that it must have come from the planet Fornax, Professor
Newton sends a team led by space ranger Rocky Jones to investigate.
DVD-R.
Purple Death From Outer Space - When the Earth is
attack by a mysterious substance causing death and leaving the victim
purple, Dr Zarkov, Flash Gordon, and Dale Arden discover the deaths are
caused by one of Ming's spaceships from the planet Mongo. The trio go to

schemes. DVD-R.
