275-215 BC Syracuse, Sicily (Greek) AE22 Coin
Issued under the rule of Hieron II, the Greek Sicilian King of Syracuse (270-215 BC)
Pressed by the invading Roman forces, in 263 he concluded a treaty with Rome, by which he was to rule over the south-east of Sicily and the eastern coast; From this time until his death in 215 BC he remained loyal to the Romans, and frequently assisted them with men and provisions during the Punic war
He kept up a powerful fleet for defensive purposes, and employed his famous kinsman Archimedes in the construction of those engines that, at a later date, played so important a part during the siege of Syracuse by the Romans
Obverse features a bust of Poseidon, facing left
Poseidon is one of the twelve Olympian deities of the pantheon in Greek mythology
His main domain is the ocean, and he is called the "God of the Sea"; additionally, he is referred to as "Earth-Shaker" due to his role in causing earthquakes, and has been called the "tamer of horses"

A trident is a three-pronged spear used for spear fishing and historically as a polearm; the trident is the weapon of Poseidon in classical mythology
