Item description
TYUYAMUNITE
Natural Uranium Rock
Jurassic Canyon, 18 miles NW from Grants NM
(This remote location is merely 12 miles north
of the East-West I-40 interstate freeway!)
Weight: 3.8 oz. Radiation: 38,700. CPM
$32.00 plus $9.50 shipping
Tyuyamunite is geologically related to
URANINITE, another uranium mineral that is
found at Jurassic Canyon. But the BEST
places to find Tyuyamunite uranium rocks are
geologist Charley Steen's legendary MI VIDA
Mine at Lisbon Valley Utah's extensive mining
area, located 40 miles southeast of Moab UT.
Sometimes over the years, I have been asked
by rock collectors to tell about uranium rocks
that glow in the dark. It is NOT the uranium
content that does the glowing; rather, the
"UNDARK GLOW" arises from other minerals
that are mixed with the basic uranium. The
SHIN-A-RUB uranium mine, located west of
Hwy 491, ten miles north of Moab Utah, has
glowing uranium rocks in addition to a variety
of other uranium minerals; I visited the
Shin-A-Rub with another prospector during
June 2017.
CARNOTITE, at some minefields, contains a
small amount of RADIUM, which glows brightly
during daytime or night. From the 1920s
until the early 1970s, the numbers on
wristwatches were coated with Undark radium
paint, so the time could be seen on the dial
even in darkness. I have a Benrus automatic
self-winding wristwatch, made in Switzerland
during the 1950s, with radium-painted
numerals on the watch dial. The radiation
has declined so much that the dial no longer
glows; yet, the audible clicks are tremendous
when the geiger probe is held closely against
the dial's enhanced face.
