Item description
Vintage 7.5 x 9.5 in. US single-weight glossy copy photograph (not a vintage original photo printed at the time it was taken) from the classic 1920's silent film action comedy/romance, THE NUT, released in 1921 by United Artists and directed by Theodore Reed. Charlie Jackson (Douglas Fairbanks), a Greenwich Village bachelor, is in love
with his neighbor, Estrell Wynn (Marguerite De La Motte), who has a theory that poor children can be
made into proper citizens by being exposed periodically to homes of the
wealthy. To aid her theory, he entertains rich patrons, but they leave in
indignation at a premature fireworks explosion. After a number of wild
adventures, Charlie rescues Estrell from rival Philip Feeney (William Lowery), and, with the aid
of millionaire cub reporter Pernelius Vanderbrook, Jr. (Morris Hughes), they are married.
The image features an interior medium shot of Charlie Jackson (Douglas Fairbanks) with Estrell Wynn (Marguerite De La Motte) at a social event as he smokes a hookah pipe while she holds the base. They exchange glances while he holds a sparkler with a small object perched atop his head! It is in very fine+ condition without any pinholes, tears, stains, or other flaws.
Despite
the claims for decades, Charlie Chaplin does not appear as his Little Tramp
character in "The Nut." This was debunked by film historian Jeffrey Vance
in his 2008 book "Douglas Fairbanks." Vance writes, "It is
clearly a Chaplin imitator, not Chaplin himself, who appears briefly in the
party sequence wearing the Tramp costume."
