Item description
? Avocado 'Zutano' is a grafted plant sent at primo size, approximately 18 to 36 inches tall. Known as a B type variety, it thrives in areas with cool winters and adds value to home orchards by pollinating A type avocados. Zutano is best grown in the ground, as it is not recommended for container planting. Provide 8 or more hours of direct sunlight per day. Hardy to 26 degrees Fahrenheit.
? Zutano produces green fruit with medium-thin skin and a delicate, mild flavor. Fruit averages 10 to 12 ounces and ripens from November through January. The tree grows upright and can reach a mature height of 25 to 35 feet. It is often used in orchards to increase productivity of Hass and other A type varieties.
? Grafted onto resilient Mexican seedling rootstock, Zutano performs well even in relatively low temperatures. Its reliable cold resilience makes it a smart choice for growers in areas with occasional light frost. Protect when temperatures dip below 26 degrees Fahrenheit.
? While Zutano is self-pollinating in cooler regions, planting with a complementary A type avocado and maintaining pollinator-friendly flowers nearby can significantly improve fruit production. All avocado flowers are both male and female at different times of the day, and successful pollination depends largely on temperature and timing.
? The distinction between A and B type avocado trees relates to the timing of flower phases, not to male or female plants. This natural cycle allows for self-pollination in mild climates, but fruiting is improved with a partner tree of the opposite type.
